London Fashion Week 2011, during its autumn and winter season, continued to captivate audiences on the third day as some of Britain’s most celebrated designers took to the runway. Renowned names like Ma Po Li and Vivienne Westwood, known as the “Empress Dowager†of British fashion, presented collections that were dreamy, wild, and full of energy. At Claridge’s Hotel Ballroom on Brook Street, the Marlborough show embraced a charming rural aesthetic, bringing the essence of English countryside to the city.
Brook Street and neighboring New Bond Street, home to luxury brands such as Hermès, Cartier, Gucci, and Chanel, set the stage for an elegant and sophisticated display. This season’s Marlborough collection was inspired by the quiet beauty of nature—bustling bushes, wildflowers, and forest landscapes created a pastoral idyll. The color palette included icy white, mocha gray, fox brown, onion red, and heather purple, evoking the classic style of hunters, anglers, and shooters, with a touch of playful tailoring.
Accessories remained a key focus, especially handbags. The new Bayswater classic series featured added rivets and a diagonal shoulder strap, while the Carter bag introduced a bold double belt handle and a classic camera bag shape with extra pockets, blending luxury with modern flair.
Emma Hill, creative director of Marlborough, once again brought her four-legged friends into the spotlight. Last season, two French Bulldogs walked the runway; this time, two Schnauzers stole the show, dressed in custom-designed Tillie dog cloaks. Their presence on the catwalk added charm and humor, making the audience smile throughout the show.
Meanwhile, Malibu England continued its love affair with the rural theme, maintaining its sweet and nostalgic charm. Vivienne Westwood, the “West Queen Mother,†chose a whimsical theme for her collection: “Royal Romance Alice in Wonderland.†The show was filled with bright colors, Scottish tartan patterns, crowns, and bowler hats, creating a chaotic yet magical atmosphere. Described as “the chaos of a runaway Queen of Holstein and a White Queen falling into the shrubs,†the collection blended punk with fantasy.
Despite the seasonal shift, Vivienne still favored skirt shorts and knee-high socks, proving that comfort and style can coexist. She remarked, “Flat shorts are a big secret. If I were young, I’d definitely wear them.†The exaggerated makeup—blood-red lips, golden or green cheeks, and mismatched eyebrows—echoed the surreal vibe of *Alice in Wonderland*, with models looking as if they had stepped straight out of the film.
Additionally, high-waisted velvet pants and large bow dresses reflected the grandeur of past British courts. As one of the most influential figures in fashion, Vivienne expressed her deep respect for the British royal family, even at the age of nearly seventy. “They gave value to Britain,†she said, ending the show with a bizarre but beautiful vision of the royal family wandering through a fantastical version of Wonderland, though it was undeniably messy.
