In recent years, with property market restrictions, a downturn in the stock market, and gold requiring significant capital, many investors have turned their attention to the "rising star" of the stamp market. After a long period of stagnation, the stamp market began to show strong growth in 2010, with the monkey ticket—representing the zodiac series—emerging as a symbol of potential wealth.
As stamp prices started to climb, many investors were eager to get involved but unsure how to enter the market. The recent surge in market sentiment has left some investors both excited and confused. According to industry insiders, if almost all other sectors are performing well, it's a sign that the postal market might be worth considering for investment.
Despite the increased interest, transaction volumes have dropped by around 10%. This trend is evident even in places like Shenyang’s Shengjing Antique City, where stamp dealers remain busy despite the reduced trading activity. Mr. Fu, a local stamp dealer, noted that while there is a lot of interest, the actual volume of transactions has declined significantly.
Since the eighth day of the seventh lunar month, the stamp market has experienced another round of price increases, leading to strong fluctuations. “Although there was a sharp adjustment, most varieties haven’t seen any price drops. However, the transaction volume has decreased by about 10%,†said Mr. Fu. He believes the current price volatility won’t last long, as frequent adjustments usually indicate a strong overall market that will likely rebound soon.
Some stamp varieties have seen dramatic gains. For example, the zodiac rabbit stamps have surged in value. Before the Spring Festival, the large version of the rabbit stamp was priced at around 70 yuan, now it has risen to 90 yuan. The small version of the rabbit stamp went from approximately 30 yuan to 40 yuan, while promissory notes increased from 12 yuan to 16 yuan. The rabbit-themed stamps are among the fastest-growing in the Chinese zodiac series. Meanwhile, the small version of rice paper scrolls has also climbed sharply, reaching 130 yuan per sheet.
Postcards have also shown strong performance during this period. High-end commemorative postcards, such as the JP147 marking the 90th anniversary of China's Stamp Exhibition, are now selling for 70 yuan each, while the JP152 commemorating the 50th anniversary of the China Academy of Engineering Physics is priced at 50 yuan per card. Lower-end varieties, sold in packs of 1,000, are currently around 2,000 yuan per pack, with room for further appreciation.
Market Alert: Investing in Stamps
Is this fluctuation a good time to enter the market? Industry experts don't think so. Mr. Fu explained that today, the market is flooded with new and old stamps, making it difficult to determine which ones are worth buying. Purchasing stamps should be approached with an investment mindset, similar to financial products. Radical investors may consider top-tier stamps like the 2010 small editions, various Zhangs, Meilan bamboo, and chrysanthemum stamps. Although these have already seen substantial gains, they could continue rising under favorable market conditions.
Stable investors, on the other hand, might look for less-expensive options that have previously underperformed. Examples include the 2010 Pearl River Small Edition, the Ching Ming Festival Small Edition, and the Asian Games opening small version. These are currently priced lower and could offer compensatory growth when the market rebounds. For those with smaller budgets, these could be promising choices.
