In recent years, with property market restrictions, a downturn in the stock market, and the high cost of gold, many investors have turned their attention to the "rising star" of the stamp market. After a long period of stagnation, the stamp market began to show strong growth in 2010, with the zodiac monkey stamps becoming a symbol of investment potential and a glimpse into wealth accumulation.
As more investors noticed the rising trend in stamp prices, many found themselves unsure how to enter the market. The recent surge in market sentiment has left some investors both excited and confused. Industry insiders suggest that when almost all sectors are performing well, the postal market is an attractive option for investment.
Despite the growing interest, transaction volumes have decreased by about 10%. In Shenyang’s Shengjing Antique City, stamp stalls remain busy even on weekdays. People come to inquire about prices and enjoy collecting, which has brought significant attention to the market. According to Mr. Fu, a stamp dealer, there is a lot of interest in the stamps, but actual trading volume has dropped significantly.
Since the seventh day of the lunar new year, the stamp market has experienced another round of price increases, leading to a volatile period. “Although there have been sharp fluctuations, most stamp varieties haven’t seen any price reductions,†said Mr. Fu. “However, the trading volume has decreased by around 10%.†He believes the current price adjustments won’t last long, as the overall market remains strong and is expected to rebound soon.
Some specific varieties have seen dramatic price increases. For example, the zodiac rabbit stamps have shown strong performance. Before the Spring Festival, the large version of the rabbit stamp was priced at around 70 yuan, now it has risen to 90 yuan. The small version increased from about 30 yuan to 40 yuan, while promissory notes went up from 12 to 16 yuan. The zodiac rabbit series has become one of the fastest-growing segments in Chinese zodiac stamps. Additionally, the small version of the rice paper scroll has also seen a rapid rise, reaching 130 yuan per sheet.
Postcards have also performed well during this turbulent period. High-end commemorative postcards such as JP147, celebrating the 90th anniversary of China's Stamp Exhibition, are priced at 70 yuan each, while JP152, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the China Academy of Engineering Physics, is sold at 50 yuan per card. Lower-end varieties, sold in packs of 1,000, are currently around 2,000 yuan per pack, with room for further appreciation in the future.
Market Alert: Investing in Stamps
Is this volatility a good opportunity for new investors? Industry experts don't think so. Mr. Fu pointed out that there is a large influx of both new and old stamps in the market today, making it difficult to judge which varieties are worth buying based solely on age. Buying stamps should be approached with the same mindset as investing in financial products—radical and stable investors must make different choices.
Radical investors may consider top-tier stamps, such as the 2010 small editions, various types of Zhang, Meilan bamboo, and chrysanthemum stamps. Although these have already seen significant gains, they could continue to rise if market conditions remain favorable. For more conservative investors, there are options that have not yet appreciated much, like the Pearl River Small Edition, the Ching Ming Festival Small Edition, and the Asian Games opening small version. These are currently priced lower and offer good entry points for investors with smaller capital. As the market recovers, these categories could see compensatory growth.
