UK warm weather hits winter clothing sales in November

According to the BRC, UK retail sales for the same store in November fell 1.6% year-on-year, the highest drop in June, due to warm weather impacting winter apparel sales, and weak consumer confidence dampened purchasing power, while overall retail sales rose 0.7% year-on-year.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) announced on the 6th that UK retail sales fell in November, the largest decline in six months, due to warm winter and weak consumer confidence led to a decline in non-food sales.

According to data released by the BRC, the same-store retail sales that opened in the UK for more than one year in November fell by 1.6% year-on-year, the largest drop since June.

In contrast, the index fell by 0.6% in October compared with a 0.7% increase in the same period of last year, highlighting the uncertainty of the UK economy and the ongoing debt crisis in the eurozone is weighing on consumer confidence.

BRC Director-General Robertson said in a statement that the warm weather in November compared to last year's much lower temperature, hitting sales of winter clothing, and footwear was particularly hit.

He added that retail stores offer a large number of seasonal discounts and expect that "carefully managing financial consumers in recent months will still be able to treat themselves and their families in December."

However, Robertson said that, like the weak sales of stores, non-food and non-store retail sales are also disappointing.
