Wang Weixiang, known as the "Clumsy Carpenter," is a traditional woodcarver who has dedicated his life to preserving an ancient craft. Despite financial struggles and heavy debts, he remains committed to his art, which has now been recognized as a provincial intangible cultural heritage. His workshop, located in a quiet corner of Fushan Town in Liaoyuan City, is modest but filled with unique creations that reflect his deep passion for craftsmanship.
The workshop, named "Clumsy Carpenter," sits on a hilltop surrounded by nature, far from the bustling city. It’s a simple red-brick structure, unassuming yet full of artistic treasures. Inside, you’ll find a wide array of hand-carved items—delicate flowers, intricate yellow crane towers, peach wood swords, and even detailed replicas of the Forbidden City. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, crafted with care and precision.
Wang, 57, comes from a long line of woodcarvers, being the third generation in his family. He learned openwork carving early on and worked as a carpenter after junior high school. Though he once had a stable income, he chose to pursue his true passion when his father passed away. On his deathbed, his father urged him to carry on the family legacy and make it bigger, so Wang made the bold decision to start his own woodcarving factory in 2005.
The journey was not easy. He invested everything he had, including loans, and faced constant financial hardship. Many apprentices left due to lack of payment, and even the equipment was sold off when money ran out. Yet, despite the losses, Wang never compromised on quality. “If others lose ten for one fake, I’d rather lose a hundred,†he says, emphasizing his commitment to authenticity.
He insists on using only the finest materials, personally selecting high-quality mahogany from Qinhuangdao each year. His dedication has slowly paid off, and his work is now being sold more widely. Although sales are still limited, he continues to believe in the value of traditional craftsmanship.
Despite owing over 300,000 yuan, Wang remains determined to keep the tradition alive. His wife, Wang Zhiying, has always supported him, fascinated by his talent and devotion. She recalls their first meeting, when he was covered in sawdust and looked rough, but his beautiful carvings won her heart. For years, she has stood by his side, helping to keep the family craft alive.
Wang Weixiang’s story is one of perseverance, passion, and pride in his heritage. Though the road has been tough, he believes that traditional craftsmanship will endure and inspire future generations.
