Underwear maintenance tips

People often say that underwear is like a woman's second layer of skin, and taking care of it is just as important as maintaining healthy skin. Today, I had the chance to speak with Mr. Liang, the head of Xianyi, France’s underwear division, who shared some essential tips on how to properly care for your undergarments. First and foremost, cleaning is crucial. Dirty underwear not only looks unhygienic but can also affect breathability, moisture control, and the softness of the fabric. Over time, this can lead to a loss of material quality and performance. Therefore, it's vital to wash your undergarments gently and thoroughly. When wearing your undergarments, be mindful of how you handle them. High-end or expensive items may look great, but they still require proper care to maintain their quality. Most undergarments are made from soft and delicate fabrics, so avoid pulling or stretching them too much when putting them on or taking them off. Also, be careful not to snag them with your fingernails. Proper storage is another key factor. It’s best to keep your undergarments separate from regular clothes, ideally in a dedicated drawer or cabinet. Avoid squeezing them, and make sure they’re completely dry before storing. Moisture can cause discoloration, thread damage, and even mildew. Don’t store them with “hygiene pills” or other chemical products, as these can weaken the elasticity of the fabric. When folding, do it carefully and store seasonal pieces in well-ventilated areas. Try to avoid using sealed plastic bags for long-term storage, as this can promote mold growth. For silk or wool garments, be cautious with moth repellents and desiccants—never store silk with insect repellent, and avoid getting wool wet. As for washing, the best method is hand washing. Use a mild, neutral detergent specifically designed for undergarments, or a general-purpose one that’s gentle on fabrics. Avoid chlorine bleach, as it can damage the material and cause yellowing. Use the right amount of detergent—too much can harm the fabric, while too little won’t clean effectively. Never apply detergent directly to the garment; instead, dissolve it in warm water (between 30°C and 40°C) before submerging the clothing. This helps prevent uneven coloring and ensures a more even clean. Taking good care of your undergarments not only extends their lifespan but also enhances comfort and hygiene. With a little extra attention, you can enjoy your favorite underwears for longer and keep them looking and feeling their best.
