What are the amber grades?

There is no uniform evaluation system for natural amber grades in China, but it can be graded according to factors such as color, block size, transparency and impurity content.

Color

Amber has a variety of colors such as red, golden yellow, honey yellow, brown yellow and yellowish white. According to the color characteristics, it is called blood, gold, incense, linger and sapphire, beeswax, etc. , black, etc. Gold and honey in different colors of amber are the most popular colors.

2. Transparency

The transparency of natural amber can be divided into three categories: transparent, translucent and nearly opaque. Most of the amber in the market is heated and improved, and its transparency is greatly improved compared with natural products. Therefore, it is important to determine whether amber is natural or heated before grading.

3. Block size

The size of natural amber varies greatly, and its impact on quality depends on other factors and whether it has been heated to fuse.

4. Inclusions

The type, rarity, and aesthetics and completeness of amber inclusions are key to determining its quality, but it is difficult to quantify and must be determined according to market conditions; usually, rare and beautiful animal and plant inclusions (inclusions) can make amber The value is doubled. (Common inclusions are generally insects or plant leaves, in addition to amphibians, small mammals, birds, etc. are very rare and extremely valuable)

According to the above factors, amber is divided into four different levels:

Super red, golden yellow, complete with fossils of animals and plants, no cracks and other impurities, transparent, generally more than a few grams.

First-grade yellow, honey yellow, with a small amount of incomplete or common fossils of animals and plants, no or a small amount of cracks, transparent, the bigger the better.

Second-grade yellow, rarely containing fossils of plants and animals, with a small amount of cracks or impurities, translucent and large.

The third grade is light yellow, yellowish brown, contains no fossils of animals and plants, has fissure impurities, is transparent, and does not differ in size.

Currently sold on the market are heat-treated amber, all three. Merchants often refer to opaque amber as beeswax.
