International Sculpture Biennial debuts in Datong Yungang

Recently, the “2011 China Datong International Sculpture Biennial” named for the first time in sculpture art form in cooperation with the China Artists Association, the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Datong Municipal People’s Government, was opened in Datong, Shanxi. The 10th Datong Yungang Culture and Art Festival was held in Datong jointly organized by the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the Chinese Sculpture Society and the Sculpture Artists Committee of the Chinese Artists Association.

The 10th Datong Yungang Arts Festival is a theme that showcases the cultural image of Datong. The festival includes a series of activities such as the Biennale and the Buddhist Cultural Forum. The theme of this year's Biennale is “Enlightenment”, which emphasizes “reconstructing traditions with ancient traditions” and has organized a series of exhibitions and academic activities. From the nominated 200 domestic and foreign sculptors, 330 sculptures from 88 sculptors participated in the exhibition. The participating works concentrated on the overall appearance and artistic level of today's sculpture field. The sculptures used in this exhibition are quite rich in materials. Except wood, stone, brick, copper, steel, etc., materials are widely used. Fur, resin, silk, and other materials are also subtly integrated into the sculptures. The works are both historical and modern. Fu Zhongwang's sculpture "National Interactive Mobile Phone" flexibly uses silk, fiberglass, wood, and mobile phone models to subtly blend materials. The works are brightly coloured and the subject is distinctive. The mobile phones that pass through the bright red silk cloth hold various mobile phones, marking the development and progress of the times. Experts and scholars participating in the "Datong International Sculpture Forum" held academic discussions on Datong's sculpture context and ongoing urban changes and cultural circumstances. In 2011, the "Zengzhulan Sculpture Scholarship" graduates' outstanding works exhibition, with a total of 17 art colleges and local art academies participating, reflected the latest achievements of this year's Chinese sculpture art higher education. Yang Quanyi from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts used the sculpture “Visited Traces” completed with comprehensive materials. In the beautiful flower pot, the bare branches are innocent, but the thick branches are the marks of growth, life is struggling to grow up in twists and turns, and tells the time of life.
