Bloodstone is expected to rise more than twice against the market in two years

In recent years, the number of French painting enthusiasts has surged, leading to a significant rise in demand for bloodstone seals. This growing interest has been reflected in the auction market, where the price of bloodstone has steadily climbed. At the Suzhou Art Auction this May, a small piece of bloodstone even reached 120,000 yuan. As a result, many ordinary investors are now asking: where can they purchase and identify genuine bloodstone? According to the Guangdong Baoyu Stone Association, bloodstone has become one of the fastest-growing semi-precious stones in the market over the past two years. Large pieces weighing more than one kilogram, as well as "Da Hong Pao" (a variety of bloodstone), have nearly doubled in value within just two years. In the Guangzhou market, the unit price of regular bloodstone seals has exceeded 50,000 yuan, while high-quality Da Hong Pao pieces have fetched several million yuan. The increased demand is largely driven by the growing number of French art lovers who are now seeking out bloodstone seals. One seller reported receiving over 20 orders in the past month, with many entrepreneurs and scholars placing custom requests. Bloodstone is a rare mineral, limited in supply, and unlike mass-produced stones such as aquamarine or malachite, it requires hand-polishing. This scarcity, combined with rising demand, has caused prices to soar. Xiang Xiankai, director of the Guangdong Geological Bureau’s Jewelry Testing Center, notes that bloodstone has become another highly sought-after Chinese gem, similar to Hetian jade. He points out that although Hetian jade prices rose sharply from 2003 to 2006 and then declined, the current price remains five to six times higher than in 2003. By comparison, bloodstone has seen a fourfold increase in value over several years, and there may still be room for further appreciation. Unlike Hetian jade, which saw a price drop during the economic downturn, bloodstone has maintained its upward trend. Meanwhile, over 50% of semi-precious stone products, such as crystal and agate, have experienced price declines. However, with the global economy beginning to recover, more collectors and investors are expected to enter the bloodstone market. For identification, one key factor is the low hardness of real bloodstone. It measures around 2.6 on the Mohs scale, so it can easily be scratched by teeth or a knife. Stones like iron ore or quartz, which resemble bloodstone, are much harder and resistant to such tests. If you encounter suspicious items that try to prevent surface testing, you can use a magnifying glass and a spotlight flashlight. When light shines on the surface, genuine bloodstone exhibits a flowing red color known as "blood," creating an illusion of movement. If no such effect is visible, it may be a fake or lower-grade product. Genuine bloodstone has few surface holes, with a smooth and even texture. Fake stones are often dyed and may show signs of wear, such as thickened pores or small brown spots under magnification. Additionally, the red color in authentic bloodstone is distributed throughout the stone, giving it depth and a layered appearance. Counterfeit versions tend to have flat, uneven color distribution, making them easy to spot. The largest bloodstone deposits are found in Changhua, Zhejiang Province, which is renowned for producing high-quality specimens. Changhua bloodstone comes in different types, including old pits and new pits. Old pit stones are generally considered superior in both texture and color, and they command prices two to three times higher than new pit varieties. The value of bloodstone also depends on the intensity and distribution of its red color. Colors range from bright red to dark red, purple, and more. The most desirable pieces have rich, vivid red tones, balanced distribution, and a sense of depth. Stones with over 50% red color are considered treasures, while those with 70% or more are extremely rare and valuable. A completely red piece is called "Da Hong Pao." For new collectors, starting with bloodstone that has 40–50% red color is a practical choice, as it offers good value without excessive cost. Pieces with less than 30% red color may not appreciate much in value. So, choosing the right balance is key to building a meaningful collection.
